CREDIT UNION AGM: Castlepollard Credit Union held their Annual General Meeting on Monday, December 6th in the Parish Community Centre, Church Street, Castlepollard.
The Chairman, P.J. Morrissey, welcomed all present and thanked them for attending on such a bad night weather-wise. In his address to the meeting, he referred to the difficult financial times that we are living in and reminded people that the Credit Union is there to help its' members. He thanked for Director, John Isdell, for his outstanding service to the Credit Union for over forty years. He welcomed Elaine Leahy from Fore on to the Board of Directors. He further expressed his thanks to Manager, Gerard Connolly, the Staff, fellow Directors and Supervisors for their work on behalf of the members. The Treasurer, Declan Brennan, reported on the finances of the Credit Union. He said that the Credit Union is financially secure in spite of the tough economic times. John Higgins, in his report on membership, told the meeting that membership continued to increse. He mentioned that proof of identity, proof of address, and proof of PPS number were all required when joining. He noted that 15 members had died during the year and remarked on the financial help which the families received from the Death Benefit Insurance. In the Credit Committee report, Mr. Higgins said that there are increasing number of students availing of the student loan product. He reported a drop in the number of loans issued during the year. Thady Burke reported on Credit Control in the Credit Union. He spoke of some members who have lost their jobs or who have taken a salary reduction and hence had difficulty in repaying their loans. He thanked those who had already advised the Credit Union of their changed circumstances and who were working with the Credit Union on a satisfactory solution. He urged members who have problems repaying their loans, to contact the Office as soon as possible before the situation gets out of hand. He said that members in arrears who ignore all contact from the Credit Union would be referred to the Debt Collector and Solicitor. Kevin O'Reilly spoke about the very successful poster competition and school table quiz. He thanked all involved especially the teachers and judges and for their help. Frank Higgins outlined the checks the Supervisors complete on an ongoing basis to ensure that the Credit Union is compliant with the legislation. At the conclusion of the meeting, a draw, confined to those attending the meeting, was held. This was followed by the Car Draw and refreshments. Immediately after the AGM, the Board of Directors held a meeting. P.J. Morrissey indicated that he wished to step down as Chairman and Patrick Murray was elected as the new Chairman. He thanked P.J. for all his work over the past fifteen years as Chairman and before that in his other roles in the Credit Union. P.J. Morrissey was elected Vice-Chairman, Tess Gannon was elected Secretary and Declan Brennan was elected Treasurer.
Sadly, despite the Season of Goodwill, thieves and burglars were once again busy in and around Castlepollard. Prior to Christmas, the Castlepollard Service Station on Mullingar road was once again robbed on December 14th, at approxiamtely 11.30pm. Two main shop windows were smashed and extensive damage was caused to the shop interior. A quantity of cigarettes and tobacco was stolen, and a small amount of cash. A van which was parked in Castlepollard on December 12th was the subject of a theft of mobile phones and a wallet. Business owners, householders, motorists and pedestrians are asked to be vigilant if they notice suspicious activity in the area. make a note of the registration number of any vehicle, and the description of any individuals or callers, and contact the Gardai immediately, followed by other businesses, family, neighbours and friends.
