Roscommon TD Michael Finneran has announced that he will not stand in the forthcoming election.

Roscommon TD Michael Finneran has announced that he will not stand in the forthcoming election.

The Minister of State for the Department of the Environment with special responsibility for housing, Mr Finneran is a TD in the Roscommon-South Leitrim constituency. His decision, announced yesterday, Wednesday, has caused some surprise in the locality. Indeed, Cllr Rachael Doherty, daughter of former TD Sean Doherty, stated just hours before Mr Finneran's announcement that she would not be putting her name forward for the general election. .

Michael Finneran was first elected to the Dail in 2002. He served on Roscommon County Council from 1989 to 2003. Even though he only announced the news yesterday, Mr Finneran is believed to have informed Taoiseach Brian Cowen of his decision before Christmas. The other sitting TDs in the three seat constituency are Frank Feighan and Denis Naughten.
