Longford County Council look set to nominate Dana Rosemary Scallon as a candidate for the upcoming Presidential election, after she was proposed by Fianna Fail councillors at the monthly meeting of the local authority.

Cllr Alan Mitchell said that, in accordance with the Presidential Election Act, the vote would be put back until Tuesday next (September 27) as three working days’ notice is required.

The proposal, put forward by Cllr PJ Reilly (FF) and seconded by Cllr Tom Victory (FF), will be voted upon at a special meeting at 4pm on Tuesday.

With Fine Gael party leader Enda Kenny indicating that councillors will abstain from voting, it’s expected that Dana will get the council’s nomination.
