Orla Dunne and her ‘Longford Leaders’ have been making excellent progress as they follow this year’s ‘Operation Transformation’ on RTÉ television. The group, who have an official weigh-in group of 10, have lost 70lbs in the past three weeks and are hoping to keep up the momentum as the series progresses.

“We had large turnouts at both our walks and our field training for a couple of weeks, but unfortunately the new year enthusiasm seems to have waned a bit, so we would love to encourage everyone to come back out and keep up the motivation,” Orla said. “We only have a few weeks left and we would love to see as many as possible out over the next week.”

Tricia Hassett from Bradley Clinic on New Street in Longford joined the group recently to show members how to avoid unneccessary injury by warming up and cooling down properly, while Martin Mulleady leads the group in field training sessions, which are held on Sunday mornings on the astro turf pitch at Longford Sports & Leisure Complex. “It helps push you as far as you can go and probably further than you think you can,” Orla explained, “but Martin is great and definitely knows his stuff.”

The group also meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm to walk at the Mall. And there is more to the meetings than exercise, as Orla says: “It is definitely a little social event at this stage, as well as hopefully helping to get Longford healthy and fit.”
