Following the success of last year’s event, The Longford branch of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA) will host a craft fair in The Temperance Hall on Saturday, July 5.
From 10am to 5pm, The Temperance Hall will come to life with a variety of crafts in the main hall with the Civic Suite being transformed with an art and floral display.
Only in its second year, the fair has evolved from its beginnings in 2013. Speaking about how it came about, President of the Longford Federation ICA, May Campbell, said, “It was ran in 2013 together with an Afternoon Tea Dance on the Sunday as our event for the Gathering with a view to continue to run it annually.
“It was such a great success in 2013 - with over 450 attending on the weekend - that we are running it again this year. It is later this year hence we decided to drop the tea dance due to the weather. We may run that later in the year in the Autumn or Winter months.”
The ICA hopes that the fair will highlight both the organisation and the unique crafters in County Longford.
“The aim of the event is to primarily promote ICA but also to give a chance to crafters to showcase their work and sell some if they so wish,” May continued. “It is to renew awareness and respect for the unique heritage and culture of Co Longford and to build the excellence in crafts and community development by Longford ICA.”
There will be several demonstrations on the day such as lumra, butter making, gathering cream, crochet, beaded jewellery, basket weaving and knitting. A café will be on site with all the culinary delights supplied solely and voluntarily by ICA.
“The 3 original ICA Bootcamp ladies from the TV series will be joining us on the day. Imelda will be there to meet and greet, Josephine will be demonstrating beaded jewellery and Breda will be making butter,” May concluded.
Irish TV will be filming the event, which will be broadcast on the Longford Matters show on Sky channel 191.
Admission is free and all information about the event can be found on the Longford Federation ICA Facebook and Twitter pages.
