On Thursday, August 13 last, an ornate candleabra was stolen from the Church of the Blessed Virgin in Newtowncashel.

On the day, the church was open to the public as is usual when during the afternoon, it was discovered that the candelabra had been removed from the building.

Parish priest, Fr Gerard Brady who is leaving for Shannonbridge, Co Offaly next month, said that while the burglary was very disappointing, he remained hopeful that it would be returned.

He also pointed out that the item taken was “old and ornate in style” and said, “there is a very slim chance that it might be returned”.

The Gardaí were notified and anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area on the date in question is asked to make contact with them.

The Gardaí are particularly interested in a red car with an attached trailer seen in the church grounds on the date of the robbery.

Meanwhile, Fr Brady is preparing to leave the parish after serving the people of Newtowncashel for the past 21 years.

“I got to know the place and the people very well over the years,” the local priest told the Leader.

“I will miss everyone.”

Plans to honour Fr Brady are currently being made and it is understood that Fr Merlyn Kenny - Parish Priest in Carrick-on-Shannon - will replace him in just over two weeks’ time.
