A popular Longford town nightclub was one of a number of premises targeted by thieves over the past seven days, gardai revealed earlier this week.

Blazers Nightclub was broken into during the early hours of last Thursday (Jan 26), resulting in an unidentified quantity of alcohol being taken.

Access to the premises was gained after vandals prised open a side door sometime between 12:20am and 9:30am.

Detectives hope CCTV footage taken from the seen will provide vital clues in determining the identity of those responsible.

A similar incident was reported at Longford Megabowl, along the town’s busy Athlone road area. Thieves managed to shut down the recreational facility’s alarm system during the hours of 8pm last Wednesday evening (Jan 25) and 10:30am the following morning. Gardai have carried out an extensive forensic examination of the scene owing to the disappearance of a “large sum” of money.

Vandals also struck at two private residences. The first, at a house in the Cnoc Na Goithe area of Lanesboro, took place at around 7am last Monday morning (Jan 23).

After forcing open a door towards the rear of the property, thieves made off with three candle holders, two ladies’ handbags, three bottles of champagne and perfume before making their getaway in a VW Golf which was also stolen.

The car, with registration 05-CE-1054 was recovered by officers two days later after it was left abandoned outside Mullingar’s Park Hotel.

In Longford town, gardai are hoping to track down two men who were seen running from an apartment at Hibernian Court shortly after 7pm last Wednesday. A follow up search of an apartment revealed the disappearance of a black iPhone.

Separately, gardai are anxious for witnesses to an assault on two men in the Townspark area of Longford last Saturday morning. The two victims, aged 25 and 26 respectively, were set upon by a gang of up to four men just after 2:30am.

They were taken to Mullingar’s Midlands Regional Hospital for treatment to facial injuries, but were released a short time later. Anyone with information is asked to contact Longford Garda Station at (043) 3346741.
