Former Cork football and hurling star, Seán Óg Ó hAilpín will be in Longford town on Friday afternoon to visit Gaelscoil Longfoirt.
The All-Ireland winner will be at the Gaelscoil to help staff and pupils celebrate its 15th anniversary.
“Seán Óg attended a Gaelscoil himself,” Yvonne Ní Mhurchú, the school’s principal, said. “I tracked down his number and rang him. He’s a fluent Irish speaker so we’ve conducted all our conversations in Irish.”
Ms Ní Mhurchú went on to say that the pupils at Gaelscoil Longfoirt are excited about getting the chance to meet the GAA legend and to converse with him through Irish.
“They’ve been told all about his story and his background, and some of the parents are excited about meeting him as well.
“We want the kids to see that you can use Irish in everyday life, not just in the education system.”
While he’s at the school, Seán Óg will also launch Gaelscoil Longfoirt’s brand new website and Facebook page, and will help cut a special celebratory cake, as teachers, pupil and their parents celebrate the school’s achievements over the past 15 years.
Past pupils and parents are also invited to attend the event, which takes place at 12.30pm this Friday.
