An investigation has been launched after several cars and businesses were targeted by vandals over the course of the weekend.

Gardai have said they are following a definite line of inquiry into the incidents, the majority of which took place on Saturday afternoon.

Detectives are focussing much of their efforts on five vehicles in particular parked in locations along the Ballinalee Road area, Dublin Street and at Ardnacassa on the outskirts of the town.

A Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Golf, blue Ford Mondeo and Silver Toyota all sustained significant damage during the course of the afternoon, with most of the cars reportedly having at least one window broken.

At around 4pm, a well known hairdressing salon on Dublin Street and the headquarters of Longford Women’s Link were also subject to suspected criminal damage. Like the damage inflicted on the five cars, windows were smashed in these incidents.

Gardai have confirmed that a definite line of enquiry is being pursued in relation to the matter.

In an unrelated incident, gardai have begun inquiries into the theft of a red Honda quad bike snatched from a garage at Ardandragh, Carrickboy. The off road buggy is estimated to be worth in the region of €6,000. Gardai are trying to thrash out when the quad may have been taken, but believe it was possibly stolen sometime between 12am and 9am last Monday April 18.

Anyone whomay have information in relation to any of these incidents is asked to contact Longford Garda Station at 043 3346741.
