The St Mel’s Festival committee have received the endorsement of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI).

The St Mel’s Festival (Friday, Setember 27 to Sunday, September 29), organised by Longford Chamber of Commerce, is an opportunity for people interested in conservation and restoration of St Mel’s Cathedral to get an insight into the restoration project from the perspective of the design team.

The RIAI run a Continuous Professional Development scheme for its members. The RIAI assign CPD points for participation in events to help insure competence to practice and that members stay up to date with developments.

They have recognised the value in the Saturday afternoon seminar and the guided tour on Sunday morning of the Cathedral organised by the committee and awarded points accordingly.

The festival will be launched on Friday (Sept 27) in St Mel’s College and on Saturday morning there will be a tour of Ardagh, followed by a visit to the EDI Centre and a seminar featuring some leading figures in the restoration project. That evening there will be dinner in Viewmount House.
Sunday morning mass will be celebrated at 10am followed by a special guided tour of the cathedral with the design team from 11am to 1.30pm. Public opening (free) is from 1.30pm.
