Fine Gael’s James Bannon only backed the Government’s legislation on abortion to avoid being expelled from the parliamentary party.

Giving his reaction to its adoption in the Dail, Cllr Kilbride said Mr Bannon had little say in the matter given the threat hanging over TDs who voted against the bill.

“He (Mr Bannon) did it to save his job,” said Cllr Kilbride. “He had no choice in the matter.”

Meanwhile, the Edgeworthstown hotelier pledged to stand by his decision to step down, indicating the split was an amicable one.
