Two men appeared at Longford District Court yesterday (Tuesday) charged with sexually abusing children.
The men, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Judge Seamus Hughes charged with using a child for sexual exploitation, sexual assault and trafficking a child for the purpose of sexually exploiting them on dates between 2006 and 2009. Superintendent Denis Shields told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had directed that both men be tried in the Circuit Court in respect of the matter.
Both men were subsequently granted conditional bail after a short hearing and ordered to appear back at Longford District Court on January 22, 2013, when it is expected that they will be served with the book of evidence.
They were also ordered to sign on at their local garda station twice a week and not to have any contact with either the co-accused or the victims in the case.
Judge Hughes then ordered a blanket ban on the publication of all names in the case in an effort to protect the injured parties’ identities.
