A host of events will take place in County Longford and the surrounding area over the Christmas and New Year period. From charity runs to unique football matches, to carol singing, there is truly something for everyone across the Shannonside region in the coming weeks.
The past 12 months couldn’t have bee much busier for Mick Flavin as he celebrates 25 years in country music. Last week, Mick confirmed that he will play on home turf over Christmas playing Wednesday, December 26 at Edgeworthstown’s Park House Hotel.

Staying in Edgeworthstown and on the same day, Mostrim GAA will hold a Puc Fada and Long Kick Competitions for a range of age groups and for both men and women. The event kicks off at 11.30am and entry fee are e5 with all proceeds going to St Christopher’s.
The Shane Brennan 5k Run will be held at Newtownforbes, also on Stephen’s Day. Registration for runners and walkers will be held in the Clonguish GAA Complex from 11am. Walkers begin at 12.45pm – Runners at 1pm. Entry fee for runners is €15, while walkers will be charged €10. All proceeds are in aid of the Irish Kidney Association and organ donation.
Stephen’s Day will also see a novel game of Gaelic Football taking place in the ‘Laurels’ in Mullinalaghta, with both ladies and gents lining out on the same teams. With a 1.30pm throw-in, a great hour of fun, craic and entertainment is guaranteed.
The annual Abbeylara GAA Club Race Night takes place on Stephen’s night in Crawford’s Lounge. Please contact the officers or any committee members for further details. Proceeds will go towards the running costs of Abbeylara GAA Club and Loan repayments on the new developments at Ballyboy.
Also in Abbeylara, The Gun Club are holding their Annual Christmas Draw and Party in Crawford’s Lounge on Saturday the 22nd of December, music on the night is by Na Fianna. Tickets for their draw are now on sale by club members and in local shops.
A comedy play for all the family takes place in The Corn Mill Theatre, Carrigallen over the Christmas period. Forget the budget and just relax and
enjoy this traditional comedy set in a chaotic 1960s doctors surgery. Preview shows will be held on Tuesday 18th and Saturday 22nd December with full shows on Thursday 27th, Friday 28th and Saturday 29th December and 3rd/4th/5th/10th/11th/12th of January. All bookings on 049 4339 612.
The Rathowen Christmas Shop is now open in the town. It has everything from little gifts, big gifts, decorations and much more so stick your head in for a look. Opening times are Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 12pm to 6pm.

Christmas Service Holy Communion will take place on Christmas Eve at St John’s, Lanesborough at 9pm. On Christmas morning Holy Communion will take place in St Coman’s Roscommon at 11am. On Sunday 30th, Carol Service will take place in St Coman’s Roscommon at 11.30am.
Sponsorship cards are now available for the annual Christmas Day Run/Walk from Newtowncashel to Lanesboro in aid of Multiple Sclerosis. The walkers will start out at 11.45am while the runners will commence at 12.15pm. Sponsorship cards are now available from any of the local organisers or from O’Brien’s shop.
The Convent House Day Care Centre are having their Christmas party on Wednesday 19th December in Cooney’s Hotel, Ballymahon. If anyone would like a good evening of music and fun, please contact the Centre on 087 2792153. A four-course meal be served at 1.30pm and the music and dance will go on until 6pm. The full cost is €18.
The Carrickedmond GAA dance will take place in the Rustic Inn Abbeyshrule on Saturday night, 12th January 2013. Tickets for the dinner dance can be purchased from any committee member.
St Stephens’s Day sees the annual charity match in aid of St Christopher’s will take place in the Michael Moran Park Carrickedmond. The married
V singles men’s game will commence at 2.30pm. Everyone is invited to come along on the day and don’t forget to bring your togs and boots.
A benefit function in support of Dermot Keane originally from Triala Dillon, Curraghroe will take place in St Faithleach’s GAA Centre on Saturday 29th December. Demot is son of Bill and the late Peggy Keane and currently lives in Australia. He has been struck down with a serious illness. Tickets are been sold door to door and there has been an unbelievable response from the general public. Tickets are priced at w10.
Kenagh Community Games committee are hosting a night of Christmas festivities in Saint Dominics Church Kenagh this evening, December 19th at 7pm. Performances by the pupils of Saint Dominic’s National School under the musical directorship of our school Principal Fintan Farrelly.
On Christmas Day at 12.30pm in Ballinamore, participants will again take to the water at Kelly’s Angle on Garadice Lake in aid of The National Council for the Blind and The Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. The Leitrim 9th Annual Goal Mile takes place in Bornacoola GAA grounds, Dromod, on New Years Day at 2pm. Special guests include Charlie McGettigan, Olympian and Leitrim Sports Star of the Year Laura Reynolds. There will be an auction with items for auction including an autographed Donegal football by the All-Ireland winning team, autographed jersey by the Mayo team, autographed Kilkenny jersey, accomodation in Kilronan castle, Lough

Christmas Carols with St Mary’s Church Choir will be on Saturday 22 December at 8pm in the Church grounds. All proceeds raised will go to local charities.
Finally, Coole Poc Fada Committee are holding their inaugural biannual Walkathon in aid of the Carers Association on Sunday, December 30th.
The event will start at 2pm from the Castlepollard GAA Complex on Pakenhamhall Road, Castlepollard and will finish at Coole Hall.
