Gardai renew appeal over sex attack

Gardai have said they are making progress with their inquiries into a serious sexual assault that took place in Longford town last week.

A woman in her early thirties was attacked as she walked past a railway bridge at Farneyhoogan, Longford shortly after midnight on Monday October 10 last.

So far, no arrests have been made but detectives hope the outcome of door-to-door enquiries and a painstaking review of CCTV footage from the general area will provide a breakthrough as the probe prepares to enter its second week.

“There is nothing further to report at this stage and our enquiries are ongoing,” said a spokesperson.

A thorough forensic examination of the scene was also carried out where the woman was attacked.

The victim, who is local and in her late 20s, was left severely traumatised by the incident, prompting gardai to renew their appeal to the general public earlier this week.

Anyone who may have been in the Farneyhoogan area of Longford town between 12am and 12:30am last Monday night, October 10, is asked to contact Longford Garda Station at (043) 3346741.
