A man was recovering last night after he sustained an eight inch slash wound in Edgeworthstown last Saturday night.
The victim was brought to Mullingar’s Midland Regional Hospital for treatment where his injuries were described as not life threatening.
It’s believed the man suffered injuries to his neck following the incident which took place in the Shannon Park area of the town at around 9pm.
A number of implements were also seized by gardai a short time later, culminating in the arrest and subsequent detention of a 24-year-old man at Longford Garda Station later that evening.
The suspect is understood to be from the Co Roscommon area as gardai follow what they last night described as a “definite line of inquiry”.
Gardai believe the attack may have stemmed from a party that was being held at a house in the estate during the course of the evening. As gardai carried out initial inquiries, a team of forensic officers carried out a technical examination of the scene. Anyone with information is asked to contact Granard Garda Station at 043 6686512.
Separately, a 26-year-old man appeared at a special sitting of Longford District Court on Monday afternoon in connection with a burglary at Palace Crescent on Sunday evening.
Gardai are also appealing for the public’s help with two incidents of criminal damage over the past weekend. The first took place in the Palace Crescent area last Friday, resulting in fire damage being caused to a grey Mitsubishi car at around 2:15am.
Two days later, a private house and car were targeted at around 1:10am. Gardai said vandals smashed windows and a front door before carrying out similar damage on a grey Toyota Avensis that was parked nearby. Anyone with information to contact Gardai at 043 3346741.
