Firefighters were called to Palace Crescent on Tuesday night last to deal with a second fire in as many days at derelict properties in the Longford town housing estate.

“We received a call at 11.04pm last Tuesday night,” Chief Fire Officer Declan Kilcline told this paper. “Gardaí were also in attendance.”

When they arrived at the scene, firefighters tackled a fire which had started amongst a pile of refuse which had been dumped outside two derelict houses in the estate.

Mr Kilcline revealed the fire service is now responding to calls in Palace Crescent and the wider Ardnacassa Avenue area with increasing frequency.

“This was the latest in a number of incidents recently,” he said. “It’s a terrible inconvenience for the residents.”

Meanwhile, Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after windows were broken at properties in the adjoining Cluain Ard estate in the early hours of last Tuesday morning.

“We’re investigating cases of criminal damage, where rocks were thrown through windows,” a Garda spokeperson confirmed. “If anyone sees anything untoward in the area, we would ask them to please contact Longford Garda Station.”

Longford Garda Station can be contacted on 043 3350570. Alternatively, incidents can be reported to the Garda Confidential Line: 1800 666 111.
