Criminal gangs behind a string of break-ins across Longford are leaving a trail of destruction in their wake as they go in search of copper cylinders, aluminium and other potentially valuable household items.

As our exclusive pictures show, taken from a vacant house in Longford town this week, criminals are continuing to target unoccupied homes and industrial premises up and down the county.

The house, which the Leader managed to gain access to in recent days, has been left with thousands of euros worth of damage after thieves pulled a copper cylinder from its downstairs living room, leaving a number of copper fittings strewn across its floor.
