Well-known for its rich heritage and history, Granard, Co Longford now has a new claim to fame in the form of Hollywood superstar Nicole Kidman.

In the July/August 2015 of genealogy magazine ‘Irish Lives Remembered’, research carried out last year by Fiona Fitzsimons from Eneclann traces the Irish ancestors of Ms Kidman. According to the piece, one of these ancestral families were the Mastersons of Rincoola, Granard.

The article explains that Ms Kidman’s great (x3) grandmother Mary Bridget Masterson (daughter of Hugh Masterson and Eleanor Briody, Rincoola) married James Callachor from Co Down and the couple travelled to Australia under the colonial bounty scheme as ‘craftsmen immigrants’.

The couple arrived in Australia on January 18, 1842. Their second son, and the first child of the family to be born in Australia, Philip Joseph Callachor, was Ms Kidman’s great (x2) grandfather.
