A Longford based couple are celebrating this week after their pedigree English Bulldog claimed second place at the World Dog Show in Milan.
Julius Krasikovas and his wife Rasa travelled to the Italian capital two weeks ago with their beloved four year old dog, ‘Euphoria’ more in hope than expectation.
However, by the time adjudication was over the pair were staggered to learn that judges had awarded ‘Euphoria’ second place in the competition’s prestigious ‘Open Bitch Class’.
Their success was made all the more remarkable given the fact 20 of the world’s top breeders had also entered.
“Two years ago, we went to Crufts but this year we decided to go to Milan and compete,” said a delighted Julius, as he cradled his nine month old son, Vilte in his arms.
The couple, who originally hail from Lithuania, hope the win will open up new opportunities in the hugely competitive world of dog breeding.
Altogether, Julius and Rasa have five dogs, three of which are English Bulldogs.
“You can be a dog breeder for ten years and get absolutely nothing,” added Julius.
“We are three years or so at this and now we are second place in the World.”
And but for the decision of the presiding judge, Rasa admitted the couple could well have been travelling back to Ireland with the mantle of ‘World Champions’ in tow.
“We talked with the judge after and he said it wasn’t an easy decision for me.
“He was looking for the best choice and he chose the other bitch.”
The couple also have big plans for some of Euphoria’s immediate offspring.
“Her daughter is Della who is 12 months old and the Junior Bulldog Champion in Ireland,” added Julius.
And with that the couple take to their feet and offer their goodbyes, indicating they intend readying themselves for another dog show appearance a good deal closer to home.
“We do go all over the world but tomorrow (Saturday) we will be at the Newtownforbes Champion Show,” declared Julius.
