Officials at Longford Town Football Club have called on the local community to show its support by displaying the club’s colours ahead of the promotion/relegation play-off game against Bray Wanderers at City Calling Stadium on Friday evening.

The team is on the verge a return to the Premier Division for the first time since 2007 after snatching a draw at the Carlisle Grounds on Monday.

The scene is now set for a winner-takes-all showdown.

Ahead of this important fixture, Longford Town’s secretery, Carmel Browne, has asked businesses in the town to display the team’s colours. “We would now respectfully ask all Longford businesses to fly Longford Town’s red and black colours proudly in the coming days, and ask everyone to come to City Calling Stadium on Friday”, she said.

Club chairman, Jim Hanley, also highlighted the feel-good factor the club can generate. “When we had a successful run in the 2000s we were known as the ‘community club’ and we were the envy of every other club in the league,” he stated. “Maybe now is a good time for local businesses to get behind the team again. Tony [Cousins] and the lads are bringing a lot of pride back to Longford and that could help lift the doom and gloom”.

The aggregate scoreline heading into the match at City Calling Stadium stands at 2-2. Kick-off is at 7.45pm this Friday, November 1.
