All four were injured when two cars and a van collided shortly before 5pm at Winetown, just outside Rathowen village.

Shocked local people looked on as staff from the emergency services worked to help those caught up in the crash,

Three people were brought to Mullingar’s Midlands Regional Hospital before later being discharged, while a fourth individual was rushed by air-ambulance from St Mel’s College in Longford to Tallaght Hospital.

The scene itself was sealed off for over three hours as forensic investigators undertook a detailed examination of the crash site.

The crash caused a grey coloured saloon to overturn before coming to a halt along the hard shoulder.

In the meantime, gardaí have appealed for motorists who were travelling along the N4 between Rathowen and Edgeworthstown between 4:30pm and 5pm on Monday to contact either Mullingar (044) 9384000 or Longford Garda Stations (043) 3350570.
