Excitement is building throughout the county as the Longford Marathon makes its highly anticipated return this weekend.

Throughout its 12 years, the annual Pat the Baker Longford Marathon has become very popular amongst athletes both national and international, and this year, up to 1,000 competitors are expected to descend on the town to take part, including athletes from the UK, United States, central Europe and India. Many locals will also take part in the challenge, including Liam Fenelon, one of the founders of the Longford Marathon who will take part in his 257th marathon, and Longford Athletic Club’s Sinead Phelan, who looks set to become the first Longford woman to compete in the 39 mile Ultra Marathon!

Personal trainer and star of RTÉ’s Operation Transformation, Karl Henry, will also join in the weekend’s events, offering last minute advice to all participants on Sunday.

Entries remain open until Saturday evening. More information on the Pat the Baker Longford Marathon and how to enter can be found at www.longfordmarathon.com, or by calling 043 33 49682. Keep up to date with the latest news on the Marathon at www.longfordleader.ie.
