A pilot and his passenger miraculously walked away with only minor injuries after their light aircraft crashed a short distance from Birr Airfield in Co Offaly.

The two men, who are from Mullingar, Co Westmeath, managed to escape largely unharmed and were treated for only minor bruises and cuts.

Both men were said to be in a stable condition at Tullamore’s Midlands Regional Hospital where their injuries were described as non-life threatening.

Emergency services including gardai, the air ambulance and local fire services attended the scene shortly after the Samba XL aircraft came down at around 5pm.

It’s now anticipated air accident investigators will spend much of the next few days examining the scene of last night’s accident in an attempt to determine what caused the crash.
