A group of GOAL volunteers will make the trip to Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday, July 28, to take part in The Longford Reek Challenge.
The aim of the challenge, says GOAL’s Tiernan Dolan, is to raise funds to provide a school in Calcutta with proper toilets and clean water, which will change the lives of hundreds. Mr Dolan explains that there are approximately 500 students in the school, who will have a clean water supply during the day, and the opportunity to bring bottles of clean water home to their families. Mr Dolan, who has taken part in Reek Sunday before, says; “Anybody who does it feels better after it, and if you do it for a charity, you feel better again.” This is the first time that GOAL have organised a climb on Reek Sunday, and Mr Dolan hopes it might start somewhat of a trend amongst other areas nationwide. He admits that GOAL are impressed by the challenge, which was launched recently by GOAL worker Maura Lennon.
There is a bus service available for those wishing to take part. It will leave the Cathedral car park at 6am on the morning of Reek Sunday, which, Mr Dolan laughs, “really adds to the challenge”. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Tiernan Dolan on 087 9896269. Sponsorship cards are available from Mr Dolan, Trish Nugent or Roisin Nevin.
