Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan TD has this week encouraged owners of septic tanks and other waste water treatment systems who have not already registered for the septic tank charge to do so by February 1st.

Sixty-one per cent of such systems have been registered with Longford County Council and of an estimated 7,556, owners of 4,641 have already paid the controversial charge.

Mr Hogan has urged those who are yet to pay, to do so before the deadline as those who have not paid the €50 fee will be ineligible for financial support should their system fail an inspection.
