A Co Cavan couple are this recuperating at home this week after masked raiders burst into their home during the early hours of Sunday morning.
The gang, at least one of whom was armed with a hammer, tied up the pair at around 5am in the Corlislea area of Kilnaleck and demanded cash.
It’s believed the victims had only just returned from attending a wedding in Mullingar when the raiders struck.
Both were taken to and later discharged from Cavan General Hospital where they were treated for shock.
Detectives leading the investigation are satisfied the couple were tied up for a relatively short period of time before the alarm was raised.
It’s unclear how many raiders were involved as gardai look to establish the identity of the gang.
“They spoke very little (during the raid) so we are appealing for witnesses who might have noticed anything to come forward,” said a Garda spokesperson.
Investigators also confirmed a shotgun, together with a small sum of cash, was stolen.
