Poll - Longford Mayors

Longford has seen a raft of new Mayors elected in recent times. But do you think they’re all necessary or are some of them surplus to requirements?

Longford has seen a raft of new Mayors elected in recent times. But do you think they’re all necessary or are some of them surplus to requirements?

Peggy Nolan was elected Mayor of Longford Town Council, John Maguire was elected Mayor of Granard town Council, and Sean Farrell was elected Mayor of Longford County Council after defeating Martin Mulleady by three votes.

In our Leader poll this week, we ask whether Longford needs three Mayors. Satirist Gerry Stembridge lampooned the notion in the Backstage Theatre a few years ago, and many find it amusing that London, with its population of 8 million, has one directly elected Mayor in the shape of Boris Johnson, whereas Longford, with its slightly smaller population of 33,000, has three Mayors elected by their peers on the Council.

Peggy Nolan, in her One on One interview with the Longford Leader, has argued that having a Mayor can help raise the profile of a town and said she would be favourable to a directly elected Mayor.
