Approval has been given for a new fire station at Lanesboro. Fianna Fail TD, Peter Kelly chose the official opening of Ballymahon’s new €1.5m library last Friday to formally announce the news. He confirmed that Longford Co Council would now be in a position to invite tenders for the development which is located between the N63 and Lough Ree Power Station.

“I have lobbied Minister Finneran continually over the past two years as I felt very strongly that it would be of huge benefit to Lanesboro and the surrounding areas to have access to a first class fire station,” he said.

“It is vital to continue investing in the productive capacity of the economy and to create construction jobs in local communities. This announcement will contribute to the development and maintenance of a quality fire-fighting and rescue service in Lanesboro.”

Local area representative, Cllr Mark Casey gave a similarly upbeat response to the announcement.

“This is brilliant news for the area; Lanesboro Fire services have a long and proud tradition serving the people of South Longford and East Roscommon. Although the current station has served the community well, in recent years it has become evident that a new modern station was required.”
