The recent spell of bad weather caused a number of local events to be postponed. The annual Christmas Lights event in Castlepollard, which was to have taken place on Sunday, December 5th, was held over until last Sunday, December 12th, when Special Guest Santa Claus made a special appearance to the very large crowd of adults and children who braved the cold weather to see the Christmas Lights being illuminated. Similarly, the Coole Christmas Fair was also postponed from Sunday, December 5th, until last Sunday, December 12th, when Santa Claus made a special appearance. Many rural roads are still treacherous with ice now being the main danger following the thaw of last week. According to weather forcasters there is a strong possibility of the severe conditions returning in the near future. Please take to the time to call on isolated neighbours, particularly the elderly or infirm, to ensure they are in good health and spirits, and that if repairs are needed following the extreme temeperatures, such as burst pipes etc., that someone is contacted to carry them out. Take the time to make sure they have enough heating fuel - turf, coal, oil - to maintain heat in their homes, and that they have sufficient food, drinks, medication etc. A telephone call, followed by a friendly face at their door, could mean a great deal to someone too proud and independent to admit they need help, or who fear putting someone to trouble on their behalf. Great credit must go to all those with 4x4 vehicles who took the time and trouble to offer transport to anyone needing to visit shops, pharmacies and doctor's surgeries during the bad weather, and those with diggers, tractors etc., who took time out of their day to clear side roads, boreens and driveways to give people access from their homes to the main roads. Special mention must also go to the Army drivers and the St. John's Ambulance and the Order of Malta Ambulance Service, and the Civil Defence, who provided 4x4 vehicles to transport nurses and paramedics all around the county during the severe weather.
Coole Social Services are hosting their Annual Christmas Party on Sunday next, December 19th, in Coole Hall between 3.00pm and 6.00pm. All are welcome to attend.
LOUGH LENE SWIM
The annual Lough Lene Swim in aid of Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, Dublin, organised each year by the Castlepollard based fundraising committee, will take place, weather permitting, on Christmas Day, Saturday, December 25th. The swim was postponed last Christmas due to heavy ice in Lough Lene, and was not held until the following March, when the event was held and a large number of hardy swimmers and their supporters braved the still cold water in aid of Our Lady's Hospital. Sponsorship cards are currently in circulation, and your support for this very worthy cause will be greatly appreciated.
