SANTA'S VISIT: Santa Claus made his annual visit to Arva on Saturday last to officially Switch-On the Christmas Lights in the town.

SANTA'S VISIT: Santa Claus made his annual visit to Arva on Saturday last to officially Switch-On the Christmas Lights in the town.

The School Choir entertained the assembled crowd at the Market Square from 3.45 pm until Santa arrived performed the official Switch-On of the Christmas Lights. He then proceed around the town and back to St Patrick's Hall where he distributed gifts to all the children from the wider area. A raffle was held that evening to help defray the costs associated with the event and was well supported – results next week. Ciaran Moore took photographs of all the children as Santa presented them with their gifts. These photo's may be purchased from Ciaran at Tycusker, Arva.

RACING

On Saturday night last the Football Club held a Race Nite in the Goalpost Bar for their Players Injury Fund. There was a great attendance and the Club would like to thank everyone for their support. Thanks is particularly due to Noel and Marion Maguire, Louis and Margaret Mc Intyre and Peter Masterson all from Dromard for running the night for the Arva Club. Noel, Louis and Peter organised the races while Marion and Margaret looked after the money and the club are deeply indebted to them for their help and for giving up their Saturday night to help out the Arva club. The races proved great craic with many surprise winners on the night and everyone present had a great night.

NEW MANAGER

The club are pleased to announce that Padraig Mulligan, Colmcille will be their new Team Manager for the coming season. A former player with Colmcille he has trained numerous teams and was a selector with his home club when they got to the County final in 2007 and 2008 when they won it for the first time in 50 years. Padraig met with the players on Sunday morning last and outlined his plans for the year. He hopes to start training in January.

PITCH CLOSED

As a result of re-sodding the goalmouths and another couple of spots in Michael Cully Park - the pitch is now closed – the usual Charity Match will not take place on St Stephen's Day. Instead it was agreed to hold a swim in Gartylough and a good number of brave souls have already agreed to take part. Sponsorship Cards are available for anyone brave enough to make a splash and the club are asking for generous support. There will also be a Bong Ball Competition and – weather permitting – Duck Racing. The Bong Ball should prove to be good craic and keep people entertained for some time. Proceedings will get underway at 1.30 pm and Irish Music will be provided in the Breffni Arms Hotel & Leisure Complex from 3.00 o'clock onwards with a Raffle for numerous prizes. The club would like to see as many as possible from the general area attending and making it a community event.

SVP COLLECTION

The local Conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society held their annual Church Gate Collection last weekend and they wish to thank everyone for their generous support. The local number for St Vincent de Paul is 086 190 8847 – strict confidence assured.

ST MARY'S NS

This year the children from the school took part in the Christmas Cards for Schools Project. Each child got to design their own unique Christmas card. There will be special packs of these cards which will include a selection of the children's designs available to buy in the Post Office, Bargain Buys, Lynch's Newsagents and also from the Secretary's office in the school. The packs will contain 10 Christmas cards of different designs and include envelopes. Each pack will cost €8. The School would very much appreciate your support in this fundraising venture.

SESSION

The December Comhaltas Session took place on Friday night last in O' Hara's Bar and Lounge. The monthly sessions have become very successful with the number of musicians increasing each month. A great night's entertainment was enjoyed by all.

FOROIGE

Forige continues each Friday evening in St Patrick's Hall, Arva at 7.30 pm for all second level students. Members of Forige will be selling Christmas Log's at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva this weekend 10th / 11th December.

LINE DANCING

Line Dancing concluded on Friday night last with their Christmas Party in the Breffni Arms Hotel & Leisure Complex. There was a great turnout and as usual the food was delicious – a big thanks to Eamonn, Philomena and staff. A great night was had by all present with Brian being voted the Most Beautiful Man on the night. The Breffni Line Dancers wish all their friends the compliments of the season. Line Dancing will resume in early January.

PARTY

Christmas Party for the Active Age Group will be held on tonight Wednesday 15th December in the Breffni Arms Hotel & Leisure Complex and everybody is welcome to attend. It is important to note that food will be served no later than 7.45 pm and the committee ask everyone attending to be in the Hotel before 7.30 pm. It is not fair on the people who are present in good time to be waiting for others who arrive late so please be punctual.

KURLING

Kurling for the Arva Active Age Group in St Patrick's Hall, Arva has been suspended until the beginning of February.

Their next Coffee morning will be on Friday 4th February 2011.

SHOW

Arva Agricultural Show Society held their Annual General Meeting on Thursday night last in the Resource Centre, Market Square, Arva. They had a good attendance and there was a general discussion on this year's event. While they were happy with the overall running of the Show they hope to make a number of positive changes next year. CORNMILL

The Corn Mill Players will present the John B. Keane play "The Chastitute" – which is Directed by Gus Ward – in the Corn Mill Theatre on the following dates starting this Thursday 16th, Saturday 18th, Tuesday 21st, Wednesday 22nd, and Monday 27th to Friday 31st December . SYMPATHY

Sympathy is extended to Michael English, Farrangarve, Arva on the death of his aunt Mrs Bridie Smith, Carrigallen which occurred on Friday 3rd December. Her remains were removed to St Mary's Church, Carrigallen and following Requiem Mass burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.
