Sitting TDs James Bannon and Gabrielle McFadden will contest the next general election after a tense Fine Gael selection convention in Mullingar on Monday night.

They were selected following a night of high drama in which Mr Bannon narrowly defeated off Westmeath County Councillor Peter Burke in a tight, and at times, edgy contest .

Delegates were told that party chiefs had decided on atwo party strategy.

Members were told one of those must be female in order to meet gender quota requirements.

With Ms McFadden’s place assured, it was Mr Bannon who emerged victorious by a reported margin of two votes. Cllr Burke must now wait to see if party bosses will add his name to the ticket over the coming days.
