A local paramedic unit was forced to call for Garda

assistance at the weekend after they were allegedly set upon while responding to an emergency call in Granard.

The Leader has learned the attack happened at 1am last Saturday in the Farrell’s Terrace area of Granard town.

It’s understood ambulance workers were called to the scene after a man took ill.

As they attempted to treat the man, they were confronted by a number of other men.

Gardaí arrived on the scene shortly afterwards in an attempt to restore calm.

It’s not believed any injuries were sustained by the paramedics, though Gardaí have confirmed they are investigating the matter.

It’s not the first time ambulance personnel have come under attack during their line of duty.

In May, a number of paramedics were assaulted as they responded to a 999 call on the outskirts of Longford town.

When contacted by the Longford Leader, the HSE declined to comment on the incident, saying it was a matter for the Gardaí.
