A man is recovering in hospital after being knocked down by a car driving the wrong way up a one way street in Longford town on Monday, writes Liam Cosgrove.

The Leader understands the victim, who is in his early 20s, may have been deliberately targeted in the incident which occurred along the Grafton Court area on Monday afternoon.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene before taking him to Mullingar’s Midland Regional Hospital for treatment.

His injuries are not described as being life threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery.

Gardai are anxious to track down a silver coloured hatchback which was seen leaving the scene shortly before 2pm and have appealed for the public’s assistance.

Gardai are also investigating if the incident is linked to a row that broke out in Longford town last week.

As first reported by this newspaper last week, fighting between two rivalling factions broke out the previous Saturday (September 13) inside a busy Longford town shop.

Anyone with information in relation to either incident is asked to contact Longford Garda Station at (043) 3350570.
