The Labour Party will field a representative in this month’s Longford-Westmeath by-election, after Westmeath County Councillor Denis Leonard announced his attention to run for election.
It’s understood Cllr Leonard, who lives in the Kinnegad area of Westmeath, had previously ruled out putting his name forward but had a change of heart.
His announcement means there are now eight candidates in the running for the Dáil seat left vacant by the death of Fine Gael TD Nicky McFadden in March.
The late Ms McFadden’s sister, Gab, was chosen as the Fine Gael candidate and Aengus O’Rourke will represented Fianna Fáil, while Sinn Féin’s Paul Hogan has also confirmed he will contest the election. Independent candidates include John McNamara, Donal Jackson, Brian Fagan, and James Morgan.
