Carthy in LWL for EAPN hustings

Sinn Féin candidate Matt Carthy was the only one of seven invited European election candidates in attendance at last Thursday’s European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN) Ireland hustings in Longford Women’s Link.

On the day that carbon tax doubled, he was there to field questions from delegates from across the Midlands-North West constituency attending the European Anti Poverty Network Ireland hustings.

Longford local election candidate Barbara Smyth said her SF colleague was unphased by the diverse nature of questions posed. “Matt expertly dealt with all issues and impressed all delegates.”

She added, “He left people in no doubt as to why he is flying high in the polls. If I am lucky enough to be elected I look forward to working with Matt.”

Meanwhile, there will be thirty-four candidates in the race to secure the eighteen seats available on Longford County Council on polling day, Friday, May 23.

Last Saturday (May 3) was the closing date for receipt of nominations and details of the candidates for the three electoral areas - Ballymahon, Granard and Longford - have been confirmed by Longford County Council Returning Officer Nora O’Farrell.

Candidates had up until 12 noon yesterday (Tuesday, May 6) to withdraw their candidature. Fine Gael have 12 candidates, Fianna Fáil 10, Independents 9 and Sinn Féin 3.
