Nearly €5million is to be invested in the Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar as part of an upgrade and reconfiguration of the Emergency Department (ED) including the Paediatric Assessment Unit which will commence in May 2014.
News of capital expenditure funding was announced on Monday. Welcoming the funding, local Labour TD Willie Penrose said that the reorganisation of the hospital groups which has seen the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar allocated to the Dublin East group had been a positive development for the hospital, making it the premier hospital for the North Midlands.
He said that the funding was “ a huge shot in the arm for the hospital at Mullingar and its status, and will no doubt improve the current situation at the Emergency Department. This will be finalised by end of year.â€
Deputy Penrose also revealed that there maybe some movement on the renowned Phase 2B project at Mullingar hospital.
“I have also been in contact with the relevant Ministers in the Department of Health, with a view to getting Stage 2 of Phase 2B up and running, which will necessitate considerable capital expenditure of upwards of €20 million, in order to see this important project finalised,†he explained.
“This development, includes an Operating Theatre Department, with a dedicated Obstetrics Department, supported by a New Hospital Sterile Supplies Department.
“It will also include a 6-bed Combined Critical Unit including isolation facilities and a 14 bed Rehabilitation Ward and associated ancillary accommodation.â€
Deputy Penrose added that he understands that the project has been included in the HSE’s Capital Programme for this year, and this has been granted some capital funding, to enable the commencement of Stage 1 of the project, which is the appointment of a Design Team,
He said this was “ an extremely important and positive development for the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar .â€
