A Lanesboro man is preparing to run the equivalent of over three marathons this month.
Declan O’Flaherty will undertake the challenge over the course of the October Bank Holiday Weekend, as he aims to reach his goal of raising €100,000 to be shared between three charities - the Jack and Jill Foundation, Temple Street Children’s Hospital, and the Brothers of Charity.
“We’ve raised €60,000 so far, and we’re confident we can raise the rest by the end of the month,” said Mr O’Flaherty, who wants to raise money for the charities which have been looking after his daughter Muireann, who was born with an extremely rare neurological disorder. “Over the bank holiday weekend, I will be running from Athlone to Dublin, and then I’ll be taking part in the Dublin City Marathon. The run to Dublin will be broken down into a series of half marathons, with a number of other runners joining me along the way.”
Declan has been taken aback by the support shown for the initiative. “The local community in Lanesboro and Ballyleague held a fun run last weekend and raised over €3,000, which shows what great community spirit there is in the area,” he said. “Everyone involved in Marathons4Muireann has gone above and beyond the call of duty.”
Other upcoming fundraisers include a golf classic and concert in Athlone. Full details can be found at www.marathons4muireann.com.
