Gardaí have questioned a man after a fire destroyed the leisure centre of the Breffni Arms in Arva, writes Aisling Kiernan.

The fire was discovered at the hotel just after 1:15 am on Monday. Hundreds of people who were attending a Robert Mizzell dance were evacuated from the hotel but no-one was injured in the incident .

Gardaí and fire crews quickly arrived at the scene and the fire was contained. A forensics team moved in on Monday to assess the damage.

“The leisure centre was completely destroyed,” Philomena Gray, hotel proprietor told the Leader.

“At this stage we have no idea what happened - we noticed smoke, the guards were called and people were evacuated from the hotel - but we are closed today (Monday) because the forensic team are in to try and establish what exactly happened. We also need to get on with the clean up.”

The Arva Agricultural Show was held in the town on Sunday and Robert Mizzell was performing at the Annual Show Dance in the Breffni Arms.

“Everyone was having such a great night, before the fire,” Ms Gray continued. “There were loads of people on the premises and a great atmosphere as well. We are just going to have to pick ourselves up and get on with it.”
