On Sunday last, July 28, thousands made their way to Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo for the annual Reek Sunday pilgrimage.

Amongst those taking part was a group from Longford, raising funds on behalf of GOAL for a street childrens’ school in Calcutta. Led by Tiernan Dolan, the group left Longford at 6am to undertake the Longford Reek Challenge.

“Conditions were absolutely perfect” Tiernan says. “The views from the top were absolutely breathtaking”. He explains that one of the group, who has participated in the pilgrimage almost 50 times now, remarked that it was the best climb yet. Though he admits that he found it tough, Tiernan would love to repeat the experience again.

Tiernan is also grateful for all the support Goal has received in Longford throughout the years, saying that the people of Longford have always been “incredibly generous and loyal”. “I’d really like to thank the people locally for their fantastic and valued support”, he says “and thanks to those who participated.”

So far, approximately €5,000 has been raised, with more money yet to come in. Upon hearing about the challenge, the children of the school sent over handmade bracelets, which the participants were presented with on completion of the challenge.
