The County Council offices will open this Saturday to facilitate the payment of the household charge.
Their offices on Water Street will be open on Saturday, 31st March from 10am to 1pm and from 2pm to 4pm. Saturday is the deadline for paying the €100 charge.
The council has confirmed there has been a considerable increase in payments over the counter for the Household charge with almost four times as many payments up to March 23rd as for the month of February 2012.
A spokesperson for the Council said, “The charge is an essential first step in the reform of the financing of the Local Government system and is to be followed by a value based property tax in 2013. The target for the amount of money to be raised from the charge in 2012 is €160 million.
“All monies raised are ring fenced for local services such as fire and emergency, libraries etc. It is vitally important that that this target is reached otherwise local services will suffer a shortfall in funds.”
Payments can also be made online at www.householdcharge.ie or by post to Household Charge, PO Box 12168, Dublin 1. Failing to pay before the deadline will result in penalties.
