Two gardaí who sealed off the scene of a fatal accident in Edgeworthstown on Saturday night were forced to dive for cover after a car ploughed through a checkpoint and crashed into a patrol car.

The incident occurred at around 2am, more than three hours after a two vehicle collision at Corboy, Edgeworthstown, claimed the life of 36-year-old Aridis Diliauskas.

He was the sole occupant of a car which crashed into a minibus, carrying 14 teenagers and two adults as they made their way home from Longford’s Hype Festival on Saturday evening.

Most of the occupants who had set off earlier in the day from Laragh in Cavan were unharmed.

The driver of the minibus however, was taken to Mullingar’s Midland Regional Hospital for what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

Gardaí, meanwhile, have appealed for motorists and anyone who may have witnessed the accident on the main N4 Dublin to Sligo Road at 11pm to contact them.

They are asked to contact either Granard Garda Station on 043 66 86512, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
