Labour TD for Longford-Westmeath, Willie Penrose, has endorsed Minister of State Alan Kelly TD in his bid to become the party’s new deputy leader.
“In my judgement he’s the best candidate,” Deputy Penrose said. “He’s young, he’s ambitious, he’s intelligent, and he was born into the Labour party; he has served as a representative at council, Seanad, Dáil and European level.”
Having previously shown interest in the position himself, Deputy Penrose told the Longford Leader he did not consider running this time.
“I got my run back in 2002, and I lost out by 25 votes,” he explained.
“I’ve also had my own health difficulties. We need a fresh face to re-focus the party, and Alan is a do-er and a worker. The next step is to give people something back and make sure they’re not squeezed any more because they’ve been bled dry.”
