Anti-abortion activists have come under fire for the “total lack of respect” shown to relatives and family members of War of Independence hero General Sean MacEoin at the weekend.
The Fine Gael leader was in Ballinalee last Sunday to officially unveil a statue marking the heroic exploits of General MacEoin and 48 other members from the North Longford Flying Column.
Upon his arrival and during his address to spectators, protestors attempted to shout down Mr Kenny with cries of “keep your promise”.
Organisers were angered that protestors continued to heckle the Taoiseach even after he asked for quiet to allow him to name the members of the North Longford Flying Column.
Committee chairperson Cllr Micheal Carrigy said: “We knew they (protestors) were coming and everyone is entitled to express their views.”
He added: “It’s just very disappointing that such a total lack of respect was shown to the dead.”
The protest was described as ‘undignified’ by Rev Janet Catteral this week.
