Longford, it seems, is the safest county in the country.

That’s almost 40 per cent below the national average and more than double the number recorded in Ireland’s newly crowned crime capital-Dublin.

The figures, contained in an extensive Irish Examiner survey, showed much of the region’s crime drop was down to a fall-off in robberies.

Recorded offences of this type remain at just 0.49 per 10,000 population.
