Longford County Council will apply for funding in relation to dangers posed to traffic at the Killasonna Cross, located outside Granard.
Cllr PJ Reilly raised concerns at a recent north Longford Roads meeting.
“Drivers who approach the cross coming from Edgeworthstown and proceed to cross over the road towards Abbeylara are now at serious risk of being struck by a vehicle coming from the Granard side,” Cllr Reilly said. “Work seriously needs to be carried out at that junction, particularly in light of the fact that there are a number of people taking their children to school every day, who are being forced to take a three mile detour in order to avoid coming onto the N55 - due to poor visibility - at this junction.”
The meeting was told that the council will be in a position to apply for a low cost scheme for works to be carried out at this junction.
Cllr Reilly added that he was very grateful to the local authority for carrying out roadworks on the N55 at Toneywarden Cross, which he said had dramatically improved visibility on the N55 from the Coolarty side.
