Up to 20 gardai from Co Longford’s Granard District are feeling decidedly chilly this week after doing their bit for Movember month.

The group, led by Superintendent Ian Lackey, threw their weight behind a cause designed to raise awareness about male cancers and which has captured the imagination of communties right across Co Longford in recent weeks.

Last Thursday, all eyes were on John V Donohoe’s in Granard as Frank ‘The Barber’ McMahon restored clean-shaven faces to those behind the campaign.

“You can definately feel it (cold),” smiled one locally based garda. “Padraig McWeeney (Garda) probably had the best tache as he had a little goatee as well.”

If the atmosphere gave light relief to many in anticipation of this week’s Budget, the same could also be said of Foley’s Bar in Longford town where eight regulars also had their moustaches shaved off.

Paying tribute to local businesses who provided spot prizes and refreshments on the night, its owner Dan Foley said hopes of reaching the group’s planned p4,000 target were still on course.

“The night went very well,” he recalled. “There was a great turnout and we did well with a street collection that was held on Friday night as well as all the pubs that we canvassed on Saturday evening.”
