HAPPY CHRISTMAS: At this time of year I would like to wish all parishioners, friends at home and away, management and staff of the Longford Leader and all readers of this column a very happy and safe Christmas.
As we all look forward to Christmas day, hopefully all boys and girls in the parish are been good and looking forward to the visit of Santa Clause on Christmas Eve night. Hopefully he will bring everything which all the boys and girls have asked for. May this Christmas time be an enjoyable one for us all.
Congratulations to the pupils and teachers from St. Sinneachs NS who staged a wonderful production of the Nativity play and a carol service in Carrickedmond church on Wednesday night of last week. It was great to see such a big crowd turn up on the night to view this very entertaining production.
On this Thursday the 23rd December pupils at St Sinneachs NS Colehill and Tashinney NS will commence their Christmas holidays. The schools will close early on this day and maybe there might be a surprise visit from the big man himself Santa Clause on the morning of the 23rd. We wish the pupils and teachers at both schools a very happy Christmas.

There are still some Christmas cards from the parish with pictures of Carrickedmond and Abbeyshrule churches on the front available. These cards cost sixty cents each. If you would like to purchase some please contact Fr Tiernan.
The newly opened local shop MFS Fuels in Carrickedmond was broken into on Tuesday night of last week and a large quaintly of gas cylinders were taken. This is indeed a major setback to the new management after only opening the doors of this new shop to the public a few days previous to this terrible setback. If anybody seen any suspicious movements around the area of MFS Fuels on Tuesday night last the 14th December please contact the Gardai in Longford.
On St Stephens's day the 26th December the annual charity match in aid of St Christopher's day care centre will take place in the Michael Moran Park Carrickedmond. The married v singles men's game will commence at 2pm. An added attraction at this year's event is the ladies game which will be played this year before the men's game at 1.15pm.
Everyone is encouraged to come along on the day and support this worthy fundraising event.
Welcome home from hospital to Patrick Egan and Kathleen Skelly. Both are home from hospital where they were treated for sickness. Great to see both home for Christmas and hopefully both make a quick full recovery and are out and about soon.
The Carrickedmond GAA annual dinner dance will take place in the Rustic Inn Abbeyshrule on Saturday night the 15th January. This years event will be special as the Intermediate champions the Carrickedmond Intermediate team will receive their championship medals on the night.
Tickets for this event are now on sale costing 25 euro each and are available from any of the following. Paul Mc Guire, Maraide mc Donnell, Dermot Mc Cormack, Mick Cahill, David Flanagan, Edwina Kelly or Eugene Quaine.
Dinner on the night will be served at 8.30pm sharp and music will be supplied by the very popular group "Temptations".
Please remember to keep used stamps and place them in the box located and marked "Used Stamps" at the rear of the Carrickedmond church. These stamps will be collected and used by missionary groups who make a small amount of money by selling them to stamp dealers.
The 2010 Carrickedmond/Abbeyshrule annual Christmas parish newsletter is now been circulated to every house hold in the parish. This newsletter is full of very interesting reading and old photographs from years past. If you did not receive your copy please contact Fr Tiernan. The 2010 Christmas newsletter would also make a very nice Christmas present for someone you might know from the parish now living abroad. If you would like to send a copy to that person Fr Tiernan has some extra copies available.
Hosted their annual Christmas party on Friday, 10th December last. Despite the weather and bad road conditions up to 100 members and friends enjoyed a beautiful meal. Members wish to sincerely thank the Rustic Inn management and Staff, Nando and Shandy for the entertainment and all those who donated prizes for the Raffle. All present had a most enjoyable night. The committee would like to wish all members a very happy Christmas and New Year. Our next event is our annual Auto jumble which takes place on Sunday, 9th January, 2011 in the Rustic Inn Abbeyshrule.
The parents association of St.Sinneachs NS held their raffle in the school on Friday 17th December last. The results were as follows;
1st prize: Catherine Cahill, 2nd prize: Susan Farrell, 3rd prize Kevin Kenny and 4th prize Deirdre Frawley. The committee would like to thank everyone who sold and supported the raffle.
Following the draw a presentation was made by The Parents Association to Kevin Farrell, John Dempsey and Paula McCormack for all the football coaching and time they have given to the children over the past few years.
The parents association would like to wish a happy Christmas to all the boys and girls their parents the teachers and all our friends.
Players of the Year
Congratulations to Barry O Farrell county Longford junior player of the year and to John O Shea county Longford Intermediate player of the year. Both lads were announced winners of their category at a special presentation which was held in the Longford Arms Hotel Longford on Friday night last.
This is indeed a great honour for Barry and John, their parents and families, their club and parish. We wish both lads continued success on the playing fields during 2011.

Please note that private Holy Communion for Christmas to the elderly and the housebound and to those in nursing homes will be administered during the two weeks prior to Christmas day by the rector.
