SHOP RE-OPENED: The Village shop has re-opened in new ownership and under new management.

We wish the very best of luck to Laura and Karl Dermody who will trade as L and K. All efforts are being made to recover An Post facilities and restore those services to Newtowncashel.

Tickets still on sale in the shop for Christmas Hamper. Tickets are €1 each and all proceeds are going to Longford Hospice. Clr Sean Farrell will pull the winning ticket on Friday evening, December 23rd at 7pm. Christmas opening hours at L&K's: Christmas Eve: 8am - 4pm; Christmas Day: Closed; St Stephen's Day: 9am - 12pm; Monday Dec 27th: 9am - 12pm; New Year's Eve: 8am - 4pm; New Years Day: Closed. Friday is Christmas Eve. "Midnight Mass" will be at 10pm, preceeded by the Blessing of the Crib. Christmas Day Children's Mass will be at 10.30am.

Congratulations to Rachael and Mark Bermingham, Forthill, on the birth last week of their new baby girl.


The Rose of Lough Ree Competiton will be held in Fallon's Pub on Wednesday December 29th. Proceeds go towards Fr Michael Murtagh's work at Clonard Monastery in Belfast. Admission €10.00.


Cirde Beag Pre-School and Childminding Facility, Carrowbeg, held an open day on Saturday, December 11, which was very well attended by people of all ages. Even Santa Claus popped in to see and spent a while chatting to the children in his grotto. Cirde Beag would like to thank everyone for their support; it was great to get so many good wishes. Longford Social Services, Meals on Wheels, gratefully acknowledge 375 euro, proceeds of their recent church gate collection. They thank the contributors and the collectors.


We offer our sincere sympathy to the family, neighbours and friends of Thomas Fayne, Caltramore, who died recently. May he rest in peace.

The Newtowncashel Branch of St Christopher's Longford would like to say thanks to everyone who helped and supported us in the past year. Fundraising was again very successful. The Raffle, Social and Church Gate Collection raised a total of 4,805 euro.

The Committee would like to pass on tier condolences to Sean Kenny, Derrydarragh, and the extended family on the death of Annie Mai. Annie Mai was a very efficient Secretary of our Branch in the past. May she rest in peace.

We wish all our friends and supporters a very happy Christmas and lots of luck in the year ahead.


The Newtowncashel Tidy Towns Committee would like to thank all those who helped keep our village neat and tidy throughout the past year, and are hoping for more volunteers in the year ahead. Our thanks to Mike Flynn for his co-operation and those in and around the Village with flower gardens so well kept. Thanks also to our three FAS workers Frances, John and Niall for their efforts throughout the year, and Longford Leader Local Correspondent John Kenny for coverage.


The Annual Christmas Day Run from Newtowncashel to Lanesborough in aid of the Longford branch of MS Ireland is being organised again for the 20th year. As a result of this event approximately 147,000 euro has been raised for Multiple Sclerosis. All are welcome, walkers start from the Hill at 11.45 am and runners at 12.15, finish at the Hall in Lanesborough where refreshments are available. All participants will receive a free t-shirt kindly sponsored by Peter Hanley Motors. We would greatly appreciate your support as this is in aid of a very worthy cause. Longford MS has come to depend on this event over the past 19 years and would like to extend their appreciation for the effort given.

Collection envelopes for 2011 are being distributed by members of the Parish Pastoral Council. We thank them and all who help in the process. Anyone who has been omitted but wishes to receive these envelopes should contact the parochial House.


Longford Community Resources Ltd (LCRL) are delighted with the announcement in the recent Budget that the Rural Transport Programme will be continued in 2011, even with a slightly reduced Budget. This is great news and indeed a relief for all the Passengers who use the Service. Many thanks to them and to all the stakeholders who have supported, and indeed campaigned for the continuation of the Programme throughout the year.

Timetable: ALL routes for 2010 will be completed on Thursday 23rd December. Services for 2011 will resume on Tuesday 4th January.
