Tuesday, May 27 was a very special day for the pupils and teachers of St Bernard’s NS, Abbeylara in north Longford.
The school was the proud recipient of its third Green Flag and special guest on the day was none other than the Duchess of Abercorn and Patron of Pushkin Trust Alexandra Anastasia ‘Sacha’ Hamilton.
St Bernard’s NS was awarded the Green Flag this time for its endeavours to conserve water in the north Longford Area and has been associated with the Pushkin Trust for the past few years.
“It was the Duchess who raised the Green Flag,” principal, Mary Quinn told the Leader.
“The school has been involved with the Trust now for the past few years and this year we received a special award for our work with schools in Northern Ireland. We have also teamed up with a school in Moscow and we are currently emailing and skyping the pupils there. It is a very exciting time for the school and we have devised some fun ways of learning.”
At the core of the Pushkin Trust’s work is the Schools’ Programme which is a cross-curricular, cross-community and cross-border project involving primary, secondary, Irish medium and special needs schools.
The initiative retains creative writing as the central core of activity and is supplemented by other creative art forms , using the environment as an important source of inspiration.
The programme is usually launched in October with a residential weekend for participating schools.
