Labour TD Willie Penrose has welcomed an opportunity for parents in Longford to have their say in a new initiative to reduce the cost of school uniforms.

Deputy Penrose says; “This new proposal, which was outlined this week by the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore and Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn, will see parents surveyed on the cost of their children’s school uniforms.

“As any parent knows, the annual high costs of school uniforms place a significant burden on parents, especially when bought in tandem with new school books” Deputy Penrose explains. “I welcome news that a template questionnaire will be issued to schools by the end of this month, which will provide valuable time for discussion between teachers and parents well ahead of the next school year.

“I have every confidence that this new initiative by Minister Quinn will also offer practical help on driving down cost of sending children to school. I would urge all parents in Longford to participate in this initiative.”
